  RACING ON SHELLSHOCK
How do I sign up to be a crew member of Shellshock?

Just send an email one of the owners and we will get back to you as soon as possible. There are no guarantees.

Do I need to know how to sail?
No. Commitment and consistency are more important than experience. By the end of the summer you will know a lot more about sailing and sailboat racing.

What type of commitment are you asking for?
Shellshock will be racing in about 2-3 races per week, Saturday, Sunday and sometimes Wednesday. For most races on the weekends, the crew needs to be on the boat at 1000 and expect to be finished by 1600. Check the racing schedule for actual dates and start times.

What will racing be like?
Shellshock will be racing in MORF (Midwest Open Racing Fleet), which is a small, relaxed, but competitive fleet. The goal is to learn the boat and have fun. You generally have more fun when you are going fast and winning, however.

What will I do on the boat?
You will be responsible for trimming the sails, helping with tactics, tacking/gybing the boat.

Will becoming a crew cost any money?
Initially, no. But as you start to get serious, you might want to purchase a few things, that makes racing easier and more fun. Sailing gloves ($12-50), keeps from getting rope burn and keeps your hand nice and soft. A spray top ($50-80), keeps you dry on those days when the waves are high. Sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, bug spray are a few more accessories that you might want to have handy. Also, buying refreshments for the crew (rum, water, and beer) is always appreciated. There is also the cost of the Tender Service.

Do I need to take steroids?
No. Shellshock is very light, and thus has relatively low sail loads. Agility is more important, since you will be required to move from side to side frequently.

Do I need to know how to swim?
No. If you find that you need to use your swimming skills while sailing, something has gone awry.

CRUSING ON SHELLSHOCK
If I don’t race, will I still get to sail?
Of course. Shellshock offers many opportunities for casual sailing over the summer. The boat also has a great spot for the July 3rd and Venetian Night fireworks show.

I don’t know anything about boating, can I still come on board?
Relax, you will not be expected to do too much work on the boat, but a helping hand is always welcome.

I can’t swim and the water scares me?
There is nothing to worry about. Shellshock has all the necessary safety gear and has enough PFDs (personal flotation devices) on board.

I enjoy the idea of sailing, but I am prone to motion sickness. Is there something I can do to make the event more enjoyable?
You can get over the counter pills, patches and/or wrist bands that nullify the effects of motion sickness. Visit this (and other) websites for some helpful tips.

Can I bring a small child and/or pet?
As the boat has an open aft cockpit, we feel that this is not a good idea.

What should I wear?
Dress accordingly and think layers. Sunglasses, hat and your favorite sunscreen are recommended. There is a limited amount of space on the boat, so please make sure to fit it all in a small backpack. Please do not bring black soled shoes or footwear that would mark up the white deck.

I heard that red wine marks up the boat, and I have this really great Château Lafite-Rothschild, can I still bring it?
Of course you can. Yes, red wine will mark up the boat, but we have no intention of spilling the stuff.

GENERAL INQUIRIES
Other than transportation and/or parking, is there anything I need to buy?
A Tender Service pass ($4 one way, purchased at the Monroe Harbor Master) will allow you to be shuttled, on a water taxi, to where Shellshock is moored. Note that you can buy a book of ten passes for $30 - great for large groups or regular guests.

What are the Tender’s hours?
Monday-Thursday, 0900-2330. Friday 0900, running continuously to Sunday 2330.

Is there somewhere close I can purchase a bag of ice?
The Monroe Harbor Master sells ice. Buy your ticket ($2 for one bag) from them, grab your ice from the ice chest at the end of the dock and bring it on board the Tender, where you can place it into the cooler on board. Remember to retrieve it before you board Shellshock and render the your ice ticket to the driver.

The boat tends to heel a lot, what keeps the boat from tipping over?
There is a big lead keel 5.5 feet below the boat the aids in the righting motion of the boat. The helmsman also has some control of hell angle. The boat may broach, but should not capsize.

Those are some cool shirts, can I get one?
You can purchase Shellshock gear from this page. Also, crew members receive tee shirts.
